Ever wondered what an academic coaching session looks like? Let me take you behind the scenes of my process and show you how I help students tackle their challenges, build confidence, and make real progress.
Setting the Tone
When I start a session, I greet my students online in our zoom room. Whether it’s a standard 50-minute session or a shorter 25-minute check-in (ideal for students who need help staying accountable), I adapt to meet each student’s unique needs.
Starting with Connection
Every session begins with a warm check-in. We chat about their day, week, or anything on their mind, creating a safe, welcoming space to ease into the session.
A Mindful Minute
Next, we practice a mindfulness exercise, like square breathing. This simple yet powerful activity calms the nervous system and prepares students to focus, be vulnerable, and tackle tough assignments.
Reviewing Goals and Habits
Using tools like a habit tracker, we evaluate progress on their goals. Together, we identify 3–5 habits to focus on and assess how well they’re doing in those areas. Students rate themselves weekly, which not only fosters self-awareness but also creates a visual representation of their habits and how these influence their academic performance.
We also track grades against the goals students set at the beginning of the semester. Visuals from the tracker help them see the connection between their habits and academic growth.
Customizing Each Session
After reviewing progress, the student and I decide on the session’s focus. This could involve:
- Mini lectures on topics like time management, self advocacy, or the latest brain science.
- Homework help with essays, math problems, science labs, or history research.
- Brainstorming and planning for larger projects they may be procrastinating.
Often, students benefit from having an accountability partner to guide them step by step through challenging tasks.
Wrapping Up
Before the session ends, students identify their next action steps for reaching their goals. When they define these steps themselves, they’re more likely to follow through.
Support Beyond the Session
My coaching doesn’t stop when the session ends. Between meetings, I:
- Send text or email reminders about assignments.
- Revise and edit written assignments before submission.
- Research school programs, college options, or tools to support executive functioning.
Parents and guardians also receive a monthly 15-minute check-in call, where we discuss progress, challenges, and growth. This open line of communication ensures everyone is aligned and supports the student’s holistic needs.
